The Royal Rumble event is going down on January 27th, and Roman Reigns has a big challenge ahead of him. He will defend the Undisputed Universal Title against LA Knight, AJ Styles, and Randy Orton in a fatal four-way match, but that wasn’t always the original plan.

Randy Orton made his return to WWE with the intention of getting his match with Roman Reigns. He made that very clear, and then he got right on his way to attain that match. Sadly for him, things didn’t work out as Roman Reigns and the Bloodline invaded the triple threat #1 contender match during New Year’s Revolution, which resulted in a fatal four-way match at the Royal Rumble.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that WWE’s original plan for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. It was originally Randy Orton getting a title match by himself, but then things changed.

“The original idea was Roman and Randy Orton at the Rumble. Essentially, there were parties involved who did not want to beat Randy Orton this early. Obviously, they felt there was money to be made with Randy Orton and Roman in a program at some point, but it’s too soon to do it.”
