AEW President Tony Khan has done a lot for the company since its inception back in 2019 and he has been with AEW through thick and thin. This includes the fact that he had to make a lot of hard decisions such as not renewing contracts for talent. That said, it appears Khan stated that he wants to avoid mass layoffs in AEW.

Sonny Kiss signed with AEW in February 2019 and was regularly featured on AEW television. That is no longer the case as Kiss was removed from Dynamite and mostly appeared on Dark and Rampage. That said, he was removed from the AEW roster page couple of days ago.

This was yet another AEW original who ended up parting ways with the company this year, which shocked fans. While speaking during the post-AEW All Out media scrum, Tony Khan was asked about Kiss’ departure. Khan made it clear he really liked Sonny Kiss but there are simply too many talent in AEW for him to manage. Khan added that he wanted to avoid mass layoffs in AEW as well.

I’ve really liked Sonny Kiss, we have a roster of over 100 wrestlers now across AEW and Sonny’s a great wrestler, I think I’ve done a lot to really keep the locker room stable and I have a lot of people that I normally keep under contract, but also I’ve done well I think to not do major mass layoffs and let 20, 30 people go at a time, but I can’t renew every single contract in AEW, it would be impossible and with such a big roster and limited amount of TV spot, I think Sonny Kiss is a great wrestler and had a lot of potential from the beginning of AEW and still has a lot of potential as a wrestler.

I think he could certainly be back eventually, as we’ve seen some wrestlers go on and do exciting things and come back, like Stu Grayson for example, so you never know what the future holds for Sonny Kiss or AEW.”

We will have to wait and see whether AEW will end up releasing more talent one way or the other, as many fans feel the company still has a lot of fat it needs to trim in order to become more efficient.

What are your thoughts on what Tony Khan had to say? Do you think Tony Khan did the right thing by not doing mass layoffs like WWE? Let us know in the comments!
