AEW lost a big star, and an executive vice president, when Cody Rhodes decided to leave the company. His departure from AEW was soon followed by his return to WWE, but there was certainly a buzz about this in AEW before everything went down in the first place.

Cody Rhodes recently spoke with Sean Ross Sapp from Fightful Select at the premiere of the WWE and Peacock documentary, “American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes.” During the interview, they discussed his status as a free agent and the attention he received when the news broke, even overshadowing the return of Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Cody Rhodes said that he viewed the situation with a sense of responsibility and emphasized his desire to continue capturing the fans’ imagination. He mentioned notable moments like All In, AEW, and WrestleMania 38 as examples of his commitment to delivering memorable experiences for the audience.

While addressing his possible departure from AEW, Cody Rhodes also shared that he initially thought he would be booed in Dallas due to the rumors circulating. However, he highlighted how the backstage atmosphere at AEW was understanding, as they all knew he took pride in his executive role and was dedicated to being a leader within the company. Cody considered AEW his home and felt that everyone recognized the business would proceed as usual.

As the American Nightmare continued to reflect on his last match in AEW with Sammy Guevara, Cody emphasized his role as an executive and his determination to ensure Guevara looked outstanding in their match. He noted that there wasn’t much time for a tumultuous fallout due to the mutual understanding among him, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega.

Cody Rhodes’ full interview will drop on July 31st. We will have to see what other points he expands on, but it is apparent that his exit from AEW is a decision that he took very seriously.

When asked about his relationship with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, Cody revealed that they communicate regularly and share a strong bond. He expressed gratitude to Matt and Nick Jackson for allowing the use of footage from “Being the Elite” (BTE) in the documentary, believing that fans will be pleasantly surprised to see it included. Cody’s connection with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega is solid, and they will forever be bonded through their experiences together.
