WWE is moving fast toward SummerSlam, and a United States Title match was expected. Now we have a bit of a better idea regarding what they have planned for the biggest party of the summer.

A new update has surfaced regarding WWE’s plans for the US Championship match involving Austin Theory and the ongoing US Title Invitational tournament. It seems that WWE has a plan and it is developing in front of fans on television.

In recent weeks on SmackDown, a tournament has been unfolding to determine the next challenger for the US Championship. Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar have emerged as the finalists, set to face off in the tournament’s ultimate showdown.

Rey Mysterio secured his spot in the finals after defeating LA Knight, Sheamus, and Cameron Grimes in a thrilling four-way match on the July 21st episode. On the previous week, Santos Escobar earned his place in the finals by overcoming AJ Styles, Butch, and Grayson Waller.

Despite speculation that the eventual US Title match would occur at SummerSlam, current plans, as reported by Dave Meltzer, do not include adding the US Championship contest to the August 5th premium live event. Meltzer mentioned in the Wrestling Observer Daily Update on June 21 that the original plan was for the title match to take place on an upcoming edition of SmackDown.

Santos Escobar is riding a wave of momentum into the tournament finals, having pinned US Champion Austin Theory in a non-title match on the July 21st show. He will face fellow LWO member Rey Mysterio next week in quite an unexpected match between stablemates.

While WWE has a lot of options on the table, a number of fans were very upset that LA Knight did not win the match this week. Only time will tell what their plans are for LA Knight, but a recent report suggested that WWE has big plans to push him after SummerSlam.
