NJPW star Kazuchika Okada recently proposed the idea of cross-promotional Wrestling World Cup. The Current IWGP Champion stated that he would even speak to Triple H and Tony Khan if necessary. There is no doubt that what Okada proposed seems to be very ambitious. While there has been no comments by Triple H about the ambitious proposal, AEW CEO Tony Khan has addressed the idea of a cross-promotional Wrestling World Cup.

Last year, AEW opened the “Forbidden Door” and held a cross-promotional pay-per-view with NJPW. The event was quite success, leading to $5 million in pay-per-view buys.

Speaking to Tim Battle on the Battleground podcast, Tony Khan was questioned about the possibility of bringing the Wrestling World Cup to reality. Khan responded with a welcoming openness to the idea, citing the success of last year’s Forbidden Door.

“I’ve got experience working with different promotions and promoting angles, matches, and storylines across different companies. It can be challenging, but we came together with New Japan Pro Wrestling to put on, I think, the best pay-per-view of the year last year Forbidden Door. There are challenges to putting on an event like that, and getting the matches set, but it’s certainly something I would be open to. I’m open to working with anybody in pro wrestling. You never know,”

WWE has tested out the Wrestling World Cup matches and was quite pleased with the results, planning to hold a World Cup tournament for each of its brand. However, the prospect of holding a Wrestling World Cup with wrestlers under other promotions is a different question altogether.

Tony Khan on the other hand has no qualms with cross-promotional ventures. After the success of last year’s Forbidden Door event he plans to hold another Forbidden Door event.

It would be sensational to see wrestlers from different companies around the world put on a show for wrestling fans. Booking such an event might prove to be a political nightmare. While Tony Khan is on board with the idea despite the challenges, WWE has not commented on the proposal.
