WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle is unquestionably one of the greatest professional wrestlers to have ever existed. The Olympic gold medalist has achieved a lot in his career and is still a well-known icon. That being said, not all plans for the Olympic Hero came together on screen.

As Kurt Angle had such great popularity among the fans, WWE had big plans for Kurt Angle and the WWE Championship. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, WWE had to scrap plans they had in store for Kurt Angle.

At WrestleMania XIX, Brock Lesnar defeated Kurt Angle to become a two-time WWE Champion. It was originally planned for Kurt Angle to defend his title and go on to have a long title reign. In the new episode of The Kurt Angle Show, Angle spoke about the change of plans.

“I was supposed to have a nice long title reign for over a year. They were gonna keep that title on me and put the titles on Team Angle — the tag team titles — and have us doing what Roman Reigns and The Usos are doing right now. That’s what was planned.”

The plans for Kurt Angle had to be scrapped as he had suffered from a broken neck about a month before his title defense at WrestleMania. The unfortunate injury left WWE no choice but to go through a change of plans and bring about the second reign of the Beast Incarnate.

Kurt Angle reflected on the possibilities for Team Angle, a stable consisting of Angle, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin. While the stable only lasted 6 months, Angle thought it had the potential to go down in history along the names of NWO and DX had they lasted longer.

“These factions, they become really popular.

“NWO, DX, and Team Angle.

“Like I said, we don’t belong in that category because we weren’t around long enough to get that kind of respect.

“But I felt that if we did, we’d be one of the greatest factions of all time.”

Kurt Angle opted for “clean up” surgery instead of the likelihood of retirement that would have resulted from a more significant operation. He was later brought back as a babyface, disbanding Team Angle as a result.
