Athena was one of the highlights of WWE NXT’s women’s division during her time in WWE. However, this was due to her two runs on NXT, as her main roster run was largely forgettable. Athena had a different look than most women in NXT at that time, and fans didn’t fail to notice that. Athena didn’t look like a stereotypical diva during her time in WWE, and it seems the company told her that to her face during a tryout.

Athena was released by WWE last year and that was something no one expected. Eventually, she made her way to AEW where she is now one of the top stars, as the ROH Women’s World Champion.

While speaking on the Talk is Jericho podcast, Athena claimed that at her first WWE tryout, the company told her that she did not have ‘the diva look.’ In addition to that, she was told to lose weight.

“I remember getting this form that said ‘doesn’t have the Diva look, work on that.’ They had this whole pamphlet on what you did well, what you didn’t do well, what you need to work on. Main critique was ‘doesn’t have Diva look.

I remember just being told ‘I just don’t know if we should sign you or tell you to lose some more weight. I was like, ‘I can lose the weight, just sign me. So, I lose the weight. I’m like, ‘yes, alright we got this, we hit that number’ but it was not in a healthy way because I wanted it so bad.”

Athena also wanted to quit professional wrestling for good after her WWE release. Thankfully, Athena realized she still had a lot to accomplish and has since seen a ton of success in AEW and ROH. We’ll have to see how she will be booked as the ROH Women’s World Champion in the coming weeks.
