Rey Mysterio is one of the most popular stars in WWE history. The famed luchador has done it all, from Mexico and Japan to ECW, WCW, and his eventual home with WWE. Along the way, Rey has accumulated a lot of ring gear.

Mysterio’s signature mask paved the way for Lucha Libre into the mainstream of the United States in the 1990s. Elaborate, ornate costumes often pay tribute to a special person, place, thing, or character that has influenced Rey. It is a truly iconic look.

Rey Mysterio recently talked about his mask collection with Brandon F. Walker on Rasslin‘. The former WWE Champion said he owns a vast number of masks. Many of them are only for one-time use.

“Less than 5,000. I think it’s a little bit over 1,000, somewhere around 1,100.

Everything I use, I use once,” Mysterio revealed. “Especially for PPV’s. And I kind of put it in storage. Every now and then, when I feel like it’s been quite some time, I’ll go ahead and bring it back out and use it for TV. What really sucks is back when I was with WWE, my early years when I was wearing the baggy outfits, a lot of that material, unfortunately, due to the climate, I would have them hanging just like clothes. And a lot of those outfits got stuck with each other and just ended up going to waste. But now I’m very picky with my outfits, and I like to position them in a certain way. I have OCD.”

Rey Mysterio’s famous mask can be seen on the cover art for the upcoming WWE2K22 video game. Mysterio has headlined WrestleManias and fought in tiny bingo halls over the years as he built his brand. There might not be another as iconic in the world.
