Samoa Joe was the NXT Champion, but he relinquished his title right before NXT 2.0 started. Tommaso Ciampa won the NXT Title during their rebranding episode, but Joe was hardly mentioned. Samoa Joe promised that he will be back, but WWE might not want him to wrestle all that often.

Samoa Joe is not just a wrestler for NXT. He also holds backstage responsibilities including as talent scout.

It was noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Samoa Joe was hired on in a primarily non-wrestling role. Taking the NXT Title off Karrion Kross meant he needed to return to the ring, but that was just about the only explanation given.

Samoa Joe was stripped of the NXT title under weird circumstances to say the least. The story is that he suffered a minor injury and would be back soon but that they were stripping him of the title. The only direct WWE word is that Joe was hired primarily for a non-wrestling role in NXT.
