WWE’s quarterly financial call didn’t really have a lot to brag about the last time around. Stocks have dropped considerably as well. Now the company is doing something that they haven’t done in a long time: release a cluster of Superstars at once.

Mike Johnson said on PW Insider Elite audio that they first heard that Superstar releases could be coming in January. The fact that the company released four people when they did could point to trying to protect their fourth quarter financial numbers.

“We did hear like two or three weeks ago that there could be some cuts coming in January, and apparently these just got, you know — and our initial reaction when we heard that [about the releases] was ooh that might not be a good sign for the fourth quarter numbers if they’re cutting back and then the cuts came earlier than expected.”

Some Superstars might not mind staying off of television. They get to enjoy catering and they still get paid. Those Superstars still take up space on WWE’s payroll. WWE might have been granting release requests with Sin Cara and Luke Harper, but they also freed up space and dropped their payroll expenses by four less Superstars this weekend.
