First Five Successful Money In The Bank Cash-Ins

Money in the Bank has evolved from a premier match at WrestleMania into a premium live event of its own. The match pits multiple superstars from the main roster brands against each other, with the winner earning a shot at WWE’s top title at the time of his choosing. MITB was a whole new concept when it was first introduced at WrestleMania 21. Ahead of the 2022 edition of the match, let’s look into the first five successful Money in the Bank cash-ins.

Edge (New Year’s Revolution: January 8, 2006)

Edge is known as the ultimate opportunist for a reason. The Rated R Superstars was part of the first-ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. He survived Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, and Christian to win the briefcase.

Edge (New Year’s Revolution: January 8, 2006)

Edge would successfully cash-in his Money in the Bank contract at the New Year’s Revolution PPV the very next year. The Ultimate Opportunist used the briefcase against a beaten-to-a-pulp John Cena, winning his first WWE Championship in the process.

Rob Van Dam (ECW One Night Stand: June 11, 2006)

Rob Van Dam’s singles push coincided with the revival of ECW in 2005. The Whole Damn Show partook in the second Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 22 in 2006. RVD successfully captured the briefcase in a match that involved most of the participants from the previous year’s MITB match.

Rob Van Dam (ECW One Night Stand: June 11, 2006)

Unlike Edge, RVD announced his decision to cash-in at the One Night Stand PPV in the summer of 2006. Cena defended the title in hostile territory and the crowd booed him at the top of their lungs. The ending saw Van Dam hit the 5 Star Frog Splash on a fallen Cena and pin him for the win.

Edge (SmackDown: May 8, 2007)

Though it was Mr. Kennedy who won the MITB contract at WrestleMania 23, he wasn’t the one to use it. Kennedy lost the briefcase to Edge on the May 7th, 2007 episode of Raw. Edge would go on to cash the contract the very next night on SmackDown.

Edge (SmackDown: May 8, 2007)

The Rated R Superstar decided to pay his former home a visit and emerged in the aftermath of the Steel Cage main event between Batista and The Undertaker. The crowd couldn’t believe their eyes as Edge downed Taker with two spears, taking the World Heavyweight Championship away from the Deadman.

CM Punk (Raw: June 30, 2008)

CM Punk was already an indie darling when he signed with WWE in 2005. The Second City Saint partook in the fourth Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 24 in 2008. Punk grabbed the briefcase after trapping Chris Jericho’s leg in the ladder.

CM Punk (Raw: June 30, 2008)

He would successfully cash-in the contract on the June 30, 2008, episode of Raw. Punk arrived to the ring alongside a referee to cash-in on World Heavyweight Champion Edge, who was struggling to recover from a beatdown at the hands of Batista.

CM Punk (Extreme Rules June 7, 2009)

Nearly a year after cashing-in on Edge, CM Punk would successfully cash in once again, this time against Jeff Hardy. The Charismatic Enigma won the World Heavyweight Championship from Edge in an all-time classic ladder match at the Extreme Rules 2007.

CM Punk (Extreme Rules June 7, 2009)

Before Jeff could enjoy his victory, Punk let him and the crowd knew he was cashing in his Money in the Bank contract. Punk hit the GTS on Jeff but was unable to pin him for the third count. After a failed near fall attempt from Jeff, Punk hit a kick to the face followed by a second GTS for the win.
