The Rhodes family is one of the most popular families in the world of pro wrestling. Dusty Rhodes is a legend of the business. His sons, Dustin and Cody, continue to inspire future superstars with their tremendous work ethic. Their status make the trio no less than a wrestling royalty. That being said, here are four things you might not have heard about the Rhodes family.
Dusty Rhodes broke into the business in the seventies. His work ethic and vision for wrestling’s longevity turned him into one of the most respected people on screen and behind the scenes. Few could pull off the stuff Dusty did and there’s no arguing that.
Dusty is also one of the few men to receive multiple Hall of Fame inductions. The American Dream has his name enshrined in the WWE, WCW, Professional Wrestling, and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame.
Cody Rhodes made his triumphant return to WWE at WrestleMania 38, and put on a wrestling spectacle with Seth “Freakin” Rollins. Their WrestleMania Backlash match also received high praise from fans and peers alike.
Given his astute wrestling ability, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Cody is a two-time state champion in amateur wrestling. He won Georgia State titles during his junior and senior years. It’s only a matter of time before he captures the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
Dustin Rhodes is highly underrated in the eyes of many fans. His match against Cody at AEW Double or Nothing in 2019 defied expectations. Most recently, Dustin had a classic against CM Punk on an episode of Dynamite.
Dustin is also no stranger to blade jobs and, much like his father, was fired from his job with WCW after cutting himself on live TV back in the day. We’ll have to wait to see if Cody does that same at the Hell in a Cell premium live event next month.
Dusty continues to inspire people even in death. The son of a plumber was heavily involved with NXT during its earlier days. Superstars like Seth Rollins, Miro (then Rusev) and Naomi all honed their craft under the tutelage of Dusty.
NXT even introduced the Dusty Tag Team Classic as a tribute to the American Dream. AEW also paid a significant tribute to Dusty when they renamed their gorilla position to “Dusty Position.” It’s truly a great honor befitting a man the stature of Dusty Rhodes.
