Triple H is no longer an active in-ring competitor after announcing his retirement back in 2022 following a cardiac event that almost cost him his life. That being said, Triple H has now revealed that Vince McMahon wanted him to compete at WrestleMania a couple of years ago and he ultimately had to turn it down.
While speaking on The Roommates Show, Triple H revealed that Vince McMahon wanted him to wrestle at WrestleMania 38 in Dallas but he wasn’t interested and couldn’t do it anyway because of heart problems.
Triple H explained that when his heart issue happened, he was already thinking about retiring. Vince McMahon wanted him to wrestle, saying they could create any storyline and find any opponent he wanted, but Triple H felt it wasn’t the right time and was okay with the idea of stepping away from wrestling.
“I was sort of at a point in my career, a few years ago, I had a health issue with my heart, which is all good now… but when it happened, I was kinda already at a place in my career where ironically they had come to me to wrestle that year in WrestleMania. Like, ‘Hey, it’s two nights, it’s Dallas, I need you to wrestle.’ I told Vince I don’t want to do it. He told me, ‘I need you to do it. It can be anybody; I don’t care. You tell me who you want to work with, and we’ll make the story. It will be great.’ “I was like, ‘Let me think about it, but I don’t… I’m not really into doing it.'”
The Game stated that he didn’t think he could perform at the level he expected anymore, especially as he got older. His busy work schedule behind the scenes also made it hard to prepare for matches. When he found out his health issues meant he couldn’t wrestle again, he wasn’t upset because he had already moved on and was focused on other parts of his career.
“I was kind of at peace with the idea that I should be at the end. Getting old, I didn’t feel like I could deliver the way I wanted to deliver.
When my health thing hit, and you know, I knew ‘Okay, I can never do this again,’ it didn’t really bother me that much because I was already on the other side of it. And also, for me, I was so busy with all the other stuff behind the scenes. It was like trying to have a 24-hour day job, and then, on top of that, I had to train twice a day, think about this match… It was just too much. I didn’t want to do it.”
Triple H is more than happy with his decision since he is now the Head of Creative in WWE and responsible for the company’s biggest boom period ever. While some fans were sad that he won’t ever wrestle again, it’s simply for the best he doesn’t anymore.
