The Undertaker spent over 30 years in professional wrestling, maintaining his iconic character throughout his entire WWE career. However, there were a few moments where he showed behavior that was uncharacteristic of his persona. He has now finally addressed a viral clip from a match at a live event in Vienna, finally explaining why he did what he did during the match.
While speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker addressed the viral clip from his match at a WWE live event in Vienna. He explained that there were two key aspects to the situation. First, he didn’t think he was being filmed, assuming it was just a house show in Vienna, and forgot that cell phones were everywhere.
The Deadman mentioned how, in the U.S., he would never work the way he did during that match, but since it was a live event, he saw it as an opportunity to teach and work with younger wrestlers like Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. He emphasized that teaching through experience is the best way to impart knowledge, as sometimes people don’t fully understand until they have felt it for themselves.
“There are two parts to that. First, you think you’re at a house show in Vienna, and you’re not being filmed, so you forget that cell phones are everywhere, and everything is going to make its way out somehow. Obviously, in the States on TV, I would never work this way, but I’m in the ring, and I have an opportunity to teach and work with the young guys. Cody might have been one of those young guys, and so was DiBiase. You use those moments to teach. That’s how I taught when I was still working. You can talk to someone until you’re blue in the face, but unless they experience it or see it, they don’t always understand it the way you perceive it.”
The Undertaker went on to explain that they were working toward a hot tag after a long heat, and he was close to finally getting in the match. At one point, it looked like he might take a whole bucket of First Form Ignition pre-workout and just consume it. He mentioned that he had seen the video and found it funny as he walked back and forth across the apron multiple times before the big moment.
A security guard had a spot where he would place a water bottle on the top step with the lid off. When Undertaker saw the signal, he stormed back and forth, causing water to spray everywhere, and fans were shocked by his actions, wondering what had gotten into him.
“So, we’re working towards a hot tag, and we’ve had a long heat. It’s almost time for me to get in, and they’re getting close to giving me the tag. At one point, it looked like I was about to take the whole bucket of First Form Ignition and just eat it. I’ve seen that video, and I probably went up and down the apron about eight times, and then there was the big moment. It was funny because one of our security guys had the spot of placing the water bottle on the top step with the lid off. He’d look at me, and I’d give him the signal like, ‘Get the bottle ready.’ So, I’m storming back and forth, and then the water starts spraying everywhere. No one ever sees me like that, so they were losing their minds, like, ‘What’s gotten into Undertaker?”‘
The Undertaker pointed out that this was all part of his teaching process. He wasn’t just going through the motions but making everything meaningful. His energy during the comeback was meant to keep the match flowing and show how important those moments were.
The Phenom admitted the clip looked great on YouTube and jokingly said people might wonder what kind of pre-workout he was using. He then mentioned that it was First Form Ignition. In the end, he saw that moment as a chance to step out of character and let the audience experience a different side of him.
“But that’s just me teaching and trying to show that this is important. It’s the little things. I’m not doing anything, but I’m doing everything. I’m making this tag that he just sold, making it mean something. And when I get in, this energy I’m using is how you need to feed my comeback to keep it rolling. Yeah, it looks like a tremendous YouTube clip. I just saw it recently and thought, ‘Ah, crap, what the hell kind of pre-workout is Taker using?’ Well, it’s First Form Ignition—First Form Ignition, get the link in our description. But yeah, that was the only time I really got to step out of character to let people experience that.”
The Undertaker even revealed WWE’s unique approach to booking long-term storylines and ultimately, he wanted to make sure that the newer generation of WWE Superstars learned things the right way. Therefore, his method of teaching Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase turned out to be invaluable in the end.
