Damian Priest might have been ejected from Judgment Day, but he’s still finding ways to stay ahead of the group that once defined his WWE career. Priest’s tenure with the Money in the Bank briefcase proved to be more than just a stepping stone—it was a pivotal moment that culminated in his crowning achievement at WrestleMania XL, where he cashed in and won the World Heavyweight Championship. Now, reflecting on his nine months with the coveted briefcase, Priest looks back at the journey and how the experience shaped his WWE trajectory.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on the Insight podcast, Priest shared the backstory behind his decision to adopt the moniker “Señor Money in the Bank” after a few failed cash-in attempts.

“Yeah. After a few failed cash-ins, I was like, doesn’t seem like I’m cashing in any time soon. So I went and I was like, ‘Hey, got an idea,’ and I presented it as merch, and they were like, ‘Great idea,’ [laughs]. I was like, we’ll do it custom, and I want to be called Señor, throw a little difference. Everybody that’s had different briefcases had a thing to it. I was like, I want to be Señor. It’s the first one, it’s completely different, and you’re always trying to be different. I loved it, and I’m glad that I was able to hold it for so long, now in retrospect, because I had a cool briefcase that I was able to hold for so long. It also came from the idea, it looked like I was carrying around a giant lunchbox around the airports. It was embarrassing. So that’s really why I wanted to change it.”

Damian Priest also delved into the practical side of traveling with the briefcase, recounting some of the quirky moments he encountered when passing through TSA with his now-iconic purple briefcase.

“A lot of times I would check a bag, just so I could put it in my checking, even though I didn’t need a checking bag. It’s the funniest thing. Everybody’s like, ‘You got money in there?’ I’m like, ‘It literally says in the bank.’ [Laughs] It literally says, ‘In the bank,’ but okay, let’s let that one go. Some would be like, ‘Money in the Bank. Manifesting, that’s good, good for you.’ I’m like, ‘Thanks, that’s exactly what I’m doing.’ [Laughs]”

As for what the briefcase actually contained during his travels, Damian Priest kept things clean, following WWE’s advice to avoid a notorious practice among past briefcase holders who had used it for less-than-sanitary purposes.

“Just a contract. But I would put my toiletries. I wouldn’t put my dirty stuff in because that was a complaint that they told me from the get-go. They’re like, ‘Hey, don’t be like previous holders that put their dirty stuff in here and just ruined these briefcases.’ I was, ‘I’m good, don’t worry.’ I would just put stuff that like, toiletries or take my gear to a show in them. But yeah, I used it. I legitimately used it like a real briefcase. I didn’t have paperwork, so I used other stuff, my sunglasses and stuff like that.”

Now, with the briefcase, championship, and even his place in Judgment Day behind him, Damian Priest finds himself in a new chapter of his WWE career. Although he and Rhea Ripley were excommunicated from Judgment Day, their personal bond has only strengthened. The future remains bright for Priest, who has shown time and time again that he’s capable of thriving in any situation.

As fans eagerly anticipate what’s next for Priest, his journey with the Money in the Bank briefcase serves as a testament to his resilience and creativity, marking a pivotal time in his career. Now, all eyes are on him as he navigates WWE’s landscape without the stable that once defined him but with the drive that made him a champion.

As 1/2 of the Terror Twins with Rhea Ripley, you never know when Damian Priest will have to have The Nightmare’s back once again. One thing is for sure, it’s hard to have a Money in the Bank run that ended as well as Priest’s did.
