Cody Rhodes completed his journey at WrestleMania 40, capturing the Undisputed WWE Championship and beginning a new chapter as champion. After successfully defending his title against Kevin Owens at Bash in Berlin, it seems their rivalry may not be over just yet.
With WWE’s next pay-per-view, Hell in a Cell, on the horizon, challengers are already lining up for Cody Rhodes. He’s set to face Solo Sikoa on the September 13 episode of SmackDown, marking the blue brand’s return to the USA Network.
On The Wrestling Informer podcast, Billi Bhatti shared some insight into WWE’s future plans for Rhodes, hinting at a potential storyline twist for Kevin Owens.
“The plan is still for Kevin Owens to eventually turn on Cody Rhodes. WWE are going to attempt to get a pay-per-view out of this match between Cody and Kevin Owens, so that is the direction going forward.“
This potential turn makes sense, as Owens’ storyline leading up to Bash in Berlin was centered on his doubts about deserving an Undisputed WWE Title shot. Despite those doubts, Owens got the match, but ultimately lost. Interestingly, his character didn’t seem too affected by the defeat afterward.
Owens is notorious for turning on his friends, a theme that was played up in his feud with Rhodes leading into Bash in Berlin. Time will tell if Cody Rhodes becomes the next victim of Owens’ betrayal, but with The Rock’s rumored return and WrestleMania 41 on the horizon, Rhodes may have to handle Owens before focusing on other challenges.
