Kenny Omega’s eagerly awaited tag team match with Chris Jericho for the AEW World Tag Team Championships was disrupted by Omega’s struggle with diverticulitis, a serious condition that required immediate surgery and delayed their plans. Fortunately, there is now an update regarding his timeline for returning to the ring.

On the May 1 episode of AEW Dynamite, Kenny Omega returned to television for the first time since December to discuss his recovery from diverticulitis. Unfortunately, his comeback was cut short when The Elite—comprising The Young Bucks, Jack Perry, and Kazuchika Okada—ambushed him, resulting in Omega being written off television.

Since then, Omega has undergone surgery for his condition and is in the process of recovering. Fans are now keenly awaiting news on when he will be able to resume in-ring action.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Kenny Omega is actively training in the gym as he prepares for a return to the ring. While a specific date for his comeback to AEW TV remains unclear, Meltzer believes Omega will likely return before the end of 2024.

Meltzer noted that while Omega’s surgery typically has a four-month recovery period, this timeframe can vary based on the severity of the injury and individual recovery rates. Omega had multiple issues beyond just a hernia, which might extend his recovery. Despite this, Meltzer feels optimistic about Omega’s return happening sooner rather than later, suggesting it could be by the end of the year.

“I don’t even know if there is a date on when Kenny Omega will return…He’s getting better I know that. Yeah [he’s been in the gym]. I looked up the surgery that he had, usually for a wrestler it’s about a four-month recovery, so a lot of wrestlers push it and probably come back quicker. So that would be mid-September but he didn’t just have the hernia problem. He had a lot of different problems. But, like I said, he is coming back, that’s pretty much the word. I don’t think it’s like months and months away. I don’t want to say this because I feel stupid saying it because he has not told me anything in this regard but just the vibe I have is it’ll be before the end of the year.”

An absent AEW star also plans on returning with Kenny Omega. Therefore, we will have to wait and see whether the Best Bout Machine will make his triumphant return to AEW this year, as fans definitely miss him a lot.
