Mercedes Mone and Willow wrestled for the NJPW Strong Women’s Title, and things didn’t go according to plan. That title was literally made for Mercedes, and it appears that Willow will carry that title now as the former Sasha Banks recovers from injury.

It was noted by Sean Sapp behind Fightful’s paywall that, “Mercedes Mone was slated to win the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship prior to her injury at Resurgence.” It was also noted that her current injury status isn’t known.

While it was feared that Mercedes Mone suffered a break, there is now a thought that she just suffered a severe sprain.

Fightful Select confirmed last week that Mercedes was slated to defeat Willow Nightingale at Resurgence to become champion. Since then we’ve learned that Mercedes herself called for the end of the match and the change in the finish when she realized something went wrong physically, at that time only known to be a leg/foot injury. We’ve been told since then that the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship was created with her in mind.

New Japan Pro Wrestling is under the impression that the injury that Mercedes sustained was a severe sprain without a break. However, those close to Mercedes have said that there’s definitely a sprain and the fear of a break. There was too much swelling to know for sure, and they’re hoping to have a clearer picture of where things stand after the swelling has gone down. Right now we haven’t heard of her planned for any imminent matches due to the injury.

It was also noted that, “Mercedes was said to have been in a ton of pain after the match, and was helped through the back by Tamina and others.” Hopefully, she is able to make a return to the ring soon.

Mercedes Mone could very well be a part of Tony Khan’s upcoming plans, after all, he was quite coy when asked about her during the Double or Nothing media scrum. It looks like everything is at a stand-still for her now.

What’s your take on Mercedes Mone’s situation and her future in pro wrestling? Sound off in the comments!
