Carmelo Hayes established himself as one of the best things about the current version of NXT. His impeccable in-ring skills and athleticism helped him win over fans as well. He has developed a lot in NXT and is the current NXT Champion. While he wasn’t drafted to the main roster this year, it appears this didn’t really bother Hayes whatsoever.
Carmelo Hayes became a bigger star in NXT after he beat Roderick Strong to unify the NXT Cruiserweight and North American Championships at NXT: New Year’s Evil on January 4, 2022.
Even after dropping it, Hayes was destined for greater things after he defeated Bron Breakker earlier this year to become the NXT Champion. That being said, he was not drafted to the main roster during the WWE Draft this year.
While speaking on Cheap Heat with Peter Rosenberg, the NXT Champion was asked about not getting drafted to the main roster during the WWE Draft this year. Hayes made it clear that it did not bother him one bit.
“It didn’t bother me one way or another. Obviously, we all want to go, we all want to move up and be able to experience main roster and that grind and everything, but I had just been focused on everything I was doing now … My time is my time, and when my time comes, that’s when I’ll go. I’m trying to do the best I can possibly do down here in NXT before I leave, leave a legacy, have a couple of banger title defenses, and just go out on top. It would have been too early for me to get pulled up at that point, I think.”
Carmelo Hayes successfully defended his NXT Championship against Bron Breakker at NXT Roadblock last week. Now it remains to be seen how long Hayes will remain the NXT Champion and eventually get called up to the main roster.
