WWE is set to crown a new World Heavyweight Champion, and the pro wrestling world can’t wait to see who wins that title. As it turns out, that title belt could have already ended up around the waist of a new champion if plans with The Rock for WrestleMania 39 didn’t fall through. Either way, that match was held off for the plans we see in action today.

Ringside News exclusively reported that the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship was on Triple H’s agenda for very long time. This title was indeed a long time coming, dating back a year at this point. It was later reported that WWE had an idea for this new title as far back as WrestleMania 38.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter dropped a timeline for the new World Heavyweight Championship title. As it turns out, WWE fans almost saw that title used at WrestleMania 39 this year, as it could have gone to the winner of a big three-way match had The Rock agreed to wrestle at the show of shows.

By November, the idea was for night one of WrestleMania, with Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre at the time tabbed for the match, or a three-way involving Cody Rhodes, if Dwayne Johnson had faced Roman Reigns at Mania.

For whatever reason, that changed, but judging from the name change of the show, the decision to go back to two titles looks to have been very recent.

Ringside News exclusively reported that anything can happen with Vince McMahon around. We were told that even if Seth Rollins is the top candidate right now, the new champion will be “the leading candidate that ends up with the title when Vince changes things.” That being said, Mr. McMahon could still change anything he wants at this point. After all, we still have a long way to go until Night of Champions goes down.

WWE has a lot of decisions to make between now and Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia on May 27th. They will crown a new champion at that event, who will be the top champion on whichever brand doesn’t get Roman Reigns.

Keep checking back with us here at Ringside News as we continue monitoring this ongoing story, and everything else going on in the pro wrestling world.
