WWE recently made some major changes to its commentary teams for RAW, SmackDown, and NXT. The most notable change has been the shift from three-person teams to two-person teams.

According to Sean Sapp behind Fightful’s paywall, these changes were looming for quite some while now and with the temporary loss of Pat McAfee, WWE was looking for a permanent replacement.

It now looks like WWE has decided to make some other moves after the release of Jimmy Smith who many felt adjusted quite well given that he wasn’t a big wrestling guy.

There were quite a few considerations to fill the commentary roles, with WWE even looking for outside options. It was also reported that the choice to move away from three-person booths could very well depend on the success of the team.

WWE is also not trying to “force chemistry” amongst the commentary teams. All the commentators and personalities that were shifted around were already under contract with the promotion Cathy Kelley being the only exception who is highly regarded among the new regime.

WWE sources also informed Fightful that Pat McAfee can still return to the WWE “whenever he is available and wants to” and he’s also well-liked within the company.
