The Viking Raiders have been trying to take a more serious approach on WWE SmackDown lately. On the July 1 episode, they were scheduled to take on The New Day. Before the bell rang, Erik and Ivar attacked Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods with their shields.
After double powerbombing Kofi, the Viking Raiders simply walked out. The next week, the team was set for a match with Jinder Mahal and Shanky. The Raiders hit a double powerbomb on Jinder for the easy squash victory before once again destroying The New Day. Erik and Ivar have been conducting their business much more deviously lately.
That turn will likely come to a head on this week’s SmackDown. Sean Sapp reported behind Fightful’s paywall that a big angle is scheduled for tonight’s show. Early plans have The New Day making fun of the Viking Raiders for their previous, less serious persona.
“The New Day and Viking Raiders program is set to continue on Friday’s Smackdown, with New Day planned to play off of Viking Raiders’ former fun-loving persona. Fightful Select learned that original plans as of Thursday night called for New Day to dress up as the duo, mocking them.”
The reported angle was part of the early plan for this week’s broadcast. Things are always subject to change based on a lot of factors. It does seem as though The New Day and Viking Raiders are set for a feud.
The Viking Raiders have struggled to find direction since a brief run as Raw Tag Team Champions in 2019. Finding themselves in a spot with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods isn’t the worst scenario. It will be interesting to see how Kofi and Xavier play off of the Raiders’ previous characters.
