CM Punk defeated Adam Page at AEW Double Or Nothing to become the new AEW World Champion. Fans were simply happy to see him become the champion and enjoy a lengthy reign. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go that way either.

Before his injury, it was announced that Punk was going to face off against Hiroshi Tanahashi at the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door crossover pay-per-view this month. Of course, that’s not happening anymore.

While speaking with Tokyo Sports, Hiroshi Tanahashi suggested that he and CM Punk should duke it out on January 4th next year at Wrestle Kingdom.

“In addition, we will propose (1/4) Tokyo Dome, the biggest box office of the year in New Japan, on the stage of the dream confrontation that once flowed. As a punk, I think I could borrow one. I have a feeling that I want to call him to Japan. I also go to (the United States) many times, so come at a special price.”

Tanahashi will face Hirooki Goto in an interim World Championship Eliminator Series match at NJPW Dominion on June 12. The winner will face an AEW star for the interim title. We’ll have to see whether Punk and Tanahashi will square off against each other next year or not.
