Ever since Matt Riddle signed with WWE, he has been one of the mainstays of WWE television, be it in NXT or the main roster. His in-ring skills are one of the best in the company and he already has good fan following. Despite that, he isn’t the easiest person to understand.

Matt Riddle’s character has certainly gotten over with fans thanks to his comedic timing and generally cool attitude while still being that of a stoner character. Vince McMahon wasn’t immediately on board with his character either.

During his time in NXT, Riddle also formed a tag team with Pete Dunne in 2020. They won the Dusty Cup that year as well. In addition to that, the two would defeat Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly for the NXT Tag Team Championship at NXT TakeOver: Portland.

While speaking on Mark Andrews’ My Love Letter To Wrestling podcast, Matt Riddle talked about his tag team with Pete Dunne. Riddle revealed that the team was originally mean to be a one-off.

“Yeah, we weren’t supposed to. I didn’t even know I was teaming with Pete until they do, ‘hey, Matt, can you cut a promo saying you how you and Pete met and became a team?’ And I was like, ‘we’re a team?’ And they’re like, ‘yeah.’ And I made up some story where I was like, ‘yeah,’ and I bring it up to Pete and I was like, ‘Pete, you’re a Bruiserweight, I’m a bro. Dusty Cup. Let’s do this.

We wrestled, I don’t even know if we were supposed to beat you guys {Subculture} and then they’re like, ‘yeah, you’re actually going to win this round and lose the next round,’ and we’re like, ‘okay’. Then the next round, they’re like, ‘yeah, you’re actually going to win this round too and go into the finals.’ And we’re like, ‘alright.’

I’m like, ‘yeah that’s what I thought,’ and Pete’s like, ‘I’ll do it.’ And then, like, when we won it, I was pretty shocked. But then I was like, ‘okay guys, like, what are we doing here?’ I don’t know, but it was a lot of fun. Did not see that coming, Didn’t see it coming.”

Matt Riddle is currently a tag team with Randy Orton and has remained a highlight of Monday Night RAW. We will have to wait and see whether he will eventually get a singles push or not.
