Rey Mysterio is one of the few WWE superstars who the company presents as timeless. The masked luchador has worked everywhere from ECW and independents to Mexico, Japan, and everywhere in between. Even repeated injuries have barely slowed him down.

The seemingly ageless wrestler was a guest on the Kurt Angle Show recently. The two WWE legends discussed a lot of topics, most interestingly Rey’s 2006 world championship reign. Mysterio says that his promos weren’t good enough to keep him on top.

I never took the time to work on what I needed to work on in order to back that title up and that was working on my promos or character development. In lucha, you were never taught that part of this industry. I think that’s where I dropped the ball, tremendously, on not being able to backup having the title and being able to cut promos.”

Rey went on to talk about how his focus on in-ring action was what he wanted to be known for. He hints at some possible regret at not improving his mic skills, however.

I’ve never really been a promo guy. I do most of my talking inside the ring and that’s what fans know me for. If I had done my end of the job, the outcome would have been different.

Rey’s been working with his son Dominik. The two have had some very interesting programs. It’s great to watch a second generation star get after it with his dad.

Do you think Rey’s lack of a good promo took away from his title run? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
