WWE Superstars can sell a lot of merchandise, especially when they’re on top of the card. Matt Cardona racked up his merchandise by growing his popularity off television.

The former Zack Ryder has been recently praised for revolutionizing online promo work. Those early days online where Ryder got fans going online brought some big royalty paydays too. He still never reach the top of WWE’s card despite bringing in big merch money.

Matt Cardona recently spoke to David Penzer on Sitting Ringside, and his run in WWE cam up in the conversation. It confused him to no end how he could go from selling so much merchandise to getting taken off television.

“Eventually, I did get put on TV and I was doing some cool stuff. I was doing some stuff with Hugh Jackman, one of the biggest movie stars in the world. I won the United States Title. I did a run-in in Madison Square Garden and the whole building was chanting my name. I’m in a storyline with John Cena, the biggest name in the company. I thought, ‘This is working. It’s finally working.’ At one point I was in the top three merch sellers, and then all of a sudden, boom, it’s over.”

Matt Cardona is now able to control he presentation a lot better, but that doesn’t change the past. His Major Wrestling Figure Podcast with Brian Myers is also incredibly popular and they were in the top 25 sellers for Pro Wrestling Tees in 2020.

I love pro wrestling and hate BS. These two things drive me. Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News. Worked in finance before realizing pro wrestling journalism made much less sense. Pro beachballs at pro wrestling shows, pro dives if someone catches, anti bullies, olives, and pineapples on pizza.
