Dean Ambrose left WWE when he decided to allow his contract to expire. They really wanted to keep Ambrose from leaving, but now they have his name locked down.

The company filed for a trademark on Dean Ambrose’s name on October 8th according to Heel By Nature. This was done in the typical way that they usually register trademarks for wrestlers’ names. The wording in the trademark included: “entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler.”

The trademark was entered into the USPTO database on November 23rd making it officially WWE’s intellectual property.

WWE already had a copyright on the Dean Ambrose name, but it was noted as “dead.” This new filing should keep the Dean Ambrose name live in WWE for some time to come.

Jon Moxley is not using the name Dean Ambrose in AEW. He is currently the company’s World Champion. WWE could be holding onto that name for a multitude of reasons, including holding out hope that The Lunatic Fringe might someday return.
