Roman Reigns returned to WWE at SummerSlam, and then he picked up the Universal Title at Payback one week later. The Tribal Chief is a strong champion, but it wasn’t WWE’s plan for that run to last a long time.

The Miz is Mr. Money in the Bank right now, and Roman Reigns does not look like his target. The company could be planning anything, because they have already changed direction many times in 2020.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Reigns was not originally supposed to hold that Universal Title for very long.

“Roman Reigns with a long title run was not the idea, believe it or not. Even though it seems so obvious, it was not the idea. I don’t know who the guy who was supposed to be the champion was supposed to be because they basically devalued everybody else.”

Roman Reigns won’t be defending the WWE Universal Title at Survivor Series. He will face WWE Champion Drew McIntyre in a champion vs champion match. This could be an interesting situation, especially when it comes to how they will book their way out of this match between two top champions.

Apparently, Roman Reigns’ time as Universal Champion wasn’t supposed to be very long at all.
