The novel coronavirus is not going away and things must be done to protect yourself from the threat. As the world slowly opens up once again, pro wrestling events are sure to eventually follow. One luchador is doing what he can to help people prepare for that day and protect themselves in the process. He is also infusing lucha libre culture which is an added bonus.
There are currently more than 9,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mexico and it is spreading. El Hijo de Soberano found himself unable to work so he started making face masks as he told ESPN.
“Last week we had a very difficult time and my wife says to me: ‘Why don’t we make face masks?’
“So we made some, but using the material we had for the costumes. We use the lycra and the fabrics that are used in the wrestling suit makings. They have double stitching, fabric reinforcement.”
The lucha libre face masks borrow from designs of lucha libre legends including El Santo and Blue Demon. They are currently selling for around 150 pesos or just over $6. This was a very clever way to make the most out of a terrible situation. As you can imagine, he is currently taking a lot of orders throughout Mexico.
