Cody Rhodes surprised a lot of fans when he was granted a release from WWE. The American Nightmare was also pleasantly surprised about the boost in popularity that followed him.

After leaving the Stardust character behind him, fans knew Cody could do more. They were excited for him as he sought out his own path. At the time fans also had no idea exactly how far Cody Rhodes would go if left to his own devices.

While speaking to Sport1 Cody Rhodes discussed that sudden groundswell of popularity he experienced. He did not expect it because he’s always been honest with himself about where he needs to be on the card.

“I don’t think I expected it. The truth is: I am very honest to myself when it comes to my spot on the card. When AEW came to fruition, I was rising up and I was being greeted so generously by its fandom. But if you compare it to fishing: That’s a bite and I’m not gonna let go of that. That’s what wrestling is about. The beautiful thing about AEW: Everybody thinks that way, everybody wants to be at the top, but everyone’s doing it the right way: by performance.”
