Welcome to Ringside News’ live coverage of AEW Full Gear.

Tonight marks the first official PPV of the AEW Dynamite era, and Full Gear features seven matches and a Buy-In Show. The main event tonight is the AEW World Title match between Chris Jericho and Cody. This is, by a massive distance, the most interesting match of the night because it’s the match that has received the most TV time and the most story development. Cody says he won’t challenge for the AEW World Title ever again if he loses, and, with the added wrinkle of the judges, this is going to be fascinating and shape AEW for some time to come.

The other big match tonight is the unsanctioned bout between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley. Now, this is sure to be a barn burner and something akin to a car wreck, but it’s hard not to think AEW is overusing the unsanctioned gimmick. It seems like every other show we’ve got one of these matches, when really they should be used incredibly infrequently to convey how big of a deal it is. Regardless, expect fireworks here.

The AEW Women’s Champion, Riho, will defend her title against Emi Sakura tonight in a match that should be fun. Honestly, there isn’t much else to say about this one because the extent of story heading into tonight is that Emi pinned Riho in a tag match on Wednesday. That’s it.

Which brings us to the rest of the card, SCU faces Private Party and Lucha Bros in their first defense of the AEW Tag Team Championships; this match is sure to be balls-to-the-walls action with zero rules or logic. And that goes for The Young Buck Vs. Santana & Ortiz as well. Sure, AEW’s tag matches are fun but a shred of logic and selling would go a very long way. Then we have “Hangman” Adam Page Vs. PAC, Joey Janela Vs. Shawn Spears, and Bea Priestly Vs. Britt Baker on the Buy-In Show.

I’m sounding pretty down on this PPV but that’s just because the majority of matches haven’t an ounce of story built into them and there’s no excuse for that when AEW’s had four weeks of TV to build feuds. That said, I fully expect this show to be fun as all hell when it comes to the in-ring product. So be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter, or by downloading the Ringside News app, and enjoy the show!

The Buy-In

The Full Gear pre-show begins and we go right to a video package for The Young Bucks Vs. Santana & Ortiz match tonight. The Bucks say they need to win this match because they no longer know if they are the best tag team in the world. Santana and Ortiz say they need to win because they’re hungry and they need to assert themselves as the best. Jim Ross predicts Santana & Ortiz will win because eventually the best are always dethroned.

Next we get a video for Jon Moxley Vs. Kenny Omega. They talk about Moxley’s injury and his rehabilitation. Omega meanwhile went back to Japan to rekindle his love of wrestling. We see footage of Moxley visiting the CZW building, where he had most of his indie matches. Omega visits Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, where he had many of his greatest matches.

Cody challenging Chris Jericho for the AEW World Title is the next video package. The people in the video talk-up Jericho’s historic run in the business and why he’s the man, while also discussing how much the fans love Cody and what he represents moving forward. JR says this is Cody’s big chance to step out from his father’s shadow and cement himself as a big player in the industry.

We go live to the arena and on commentary we have Goldenboy, Taz, and Excalibur. The ramp runs all the way to the ring, like old WCW or some TNA shows. It’s time for our first match of the evening.

Bea Priestly Vs. Dr. Britt Baker

Baker stomps to the ring and she’s ready to fight. The bell rings and Bea retreats from the ring. She gets back in but Baker hits her with a Thesz Press and unloads some right hands. Bea leaves the ring again. Priestly comes back in and Baker hits her with a slam via the hair, then looks for a backslide but Bea rolls through. Baker looks for the Lockjaw but Priestly rolls out and kicks Britt in the head.

Bea slows the pace down and drags Britt under the bottom rope and stretches her around the ring post. Priestly swaggers around ringside before getting back in and choking Baker on the middle rope. Priestly follows-up with a running knee attack to Baker on the ropes for a two count. Baker looks for a body slam but her back gives out and Bea kicks her in the head for a near-fall.

Priestly applies a body scissors but Baker punches her way out and they exchange shots on their feet. Bea whips Baker to the ropes, she ducks the lariat, then both hit stereo lariats and go down. We see Darby Allin watching at ringside. They get to their feet and Baker hits a few right hands, followed by a lariat and a back elbow. Shining Wizard in the corner from Baker, then whips Bea to the other corner but Priestly springboards over Baker, only to get dropped with a clothesline. Baker hits a swinging neckbreaker for a near-fall.

Avalanche brainbuster from Baker, then she looks for a second Amigo but her back gave out. Baker drops Bea with a kick for a two-count, then Priestly reverses into a crucifix pin for a two-count. Bea hits a German suplex, then rolls through and hits a leg-trap German suplex for a near-fall. Bea applies a submission but Baker reaches the ropes.

Baker rolls to the apron but Priestly connects with a double foot stomp from the top rope. Priestly gets her back inside for a near-fall. Bea lifts Baker up in an electric chair position, looking for Queen’s Landing, but Baker slides down the back and hits a Canadian Destroyer for a near-fall – how many of those will we see tonight? A superkick from Baker, then looks for Lockjaw but Bea pulls her hair to get out. A second superkick from Baker, followed by Lockjaw again and Priestly taps!

Winner: Dr. Britt Baker

After the match and Britt leaves, we get some music and candles burning in the screen. The lights go out and Awesome Kong is on the stage with Brandi Rhodes. Kong stomps to the ring and drops Bea with a spinning back fist Kong pulls out a knife, then hands it to Rhodes, before hitting an implant buster. Brandi hands the knife back to Kong, then pulls a part of Bea’s hair and Kong cuts it off. Kong smells the hair before leaving with Brandi.

And that’s it for The Buy-In. AEW Full Gear begins now!

AEW Full Gear kicks-off with a video package of all the matches taking place tonight, from PAC Vs. Hangman Page to Chris Jericho Vs. Cody.

The Younc Bucks are out first, and they stand with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express at ringside. Santana & Ortiz come out and try to antagonise the legendary tag team but the Bucks shoo them away.

The Young Bucks Vs. Santana & Ortiz

The match starts with Matt Jackson and Ortiz, but both men attack their opponents partners right away. A brawl breaks out and The Bucks clear the ring, then hit dives onto Santana and Ortiz at ringside. Nick throws Santana into the crowd.

Back in the ring, Nick is legal and both he and Matt make use of quick tags to double team Ortiz in the ring. Matt gets the tag and hits a spear while Santana is working on Nick. The Bucks slingshot themselves onto their opponents a few times. Santana starts to make a comeback with fierce chops but realizes Ortiz isn’t on the apron. The Bucks continue to wear down Santana until he finally makes the tag.

Ortiz comes in but gets taken down with an arm drag from Nick. Ortiz is down for a minute and makes a tag but the referee didn’t see it and forced Santana back out. Matt and Nick continue to beat down Ortiz until Santana finally gets the tag and they lock the Bucks in a gory special/Boston crab at the same time!

Santana and Ortiz hit multiple sentons and a splash before taunting the crowd. Santana works on Nick’s leg in their corner. Ortiz tag in and slows the pace down, making use of quick tags. Eventually, Matt and Santana get the tag at the same time, with Matt dropping Ortiz with a dropkick and knocking Santana from the ring. Back inside the ring, Santana and Ortiz attempt a double superplex but Nick fights out of it. Lots of reversals until Santana and Ortiz hit double dropkicks to Nick’s knees. Ortiz and Nick are legal and Ortiz is working him over, while Matt starts to get hot on the apron. They trade strikes until Nick hits a superkick and Matt gets the hot tag. Matt comes in with a double northern lights suplex to both men for a two-count. Nick and Matt hit a moonsault/splash combo on Santana for two.

Santana counters Matt with a cutter and Ortiz hits a dive through the ropes onto Nick – the pace is picking up. Matt clocks Ortiz with a superkick, then  two more to the back of the head. Santana then moonsaults into a pair of superkicks and he’s down. Nick and Matt hit a powerbomb and sliced bread for a near-fall. They look for it again but this time Matt’s leg gives out.

Santana makes the tag and hits his own superkick. Nick tags in and spits his gum at Santana, who picks it up and puts it in his mouth – to the disgust of everybody. Santana spits it at Nick and misses, then Nick starts unloading on both men with kicks but his knee is still bugging im. Ortiz capitalises on that and hits a powerbomb but the pin is broken up by Matt. Santana and Ortiz knocks Matt from the ring and hit their finisher for the pin and the win!

Winners: Santana & Ortiz

After the match, Sammy Guevara comes out and gives Ortiz a sock with baseballs in it, apparently. Before they can make use of it though, the Rock n’ Roll get on the apron. They slingshot Ricky Morton into the ring but he ends up hitting Ortiz with a Canadian Destroyer in the process! Morton and Co. then clear the ring and he hits a suicide dive! Madness!

It’s time for the match between Adam Page and the bastard…

Page barely beats the count to get back into the ring. PAC wastes no time and hits Page with a big missile dropkick for a near-fall. PAC heads to the top rope but Page climbs up with him and hits a super fallaway slam. Page lifts PAC for the Deadeye but the bastard locks-in the Brutalizer while standing! The Hangman falls over but he’s under the ropes so the referee forces PAC off.

PAC drags Page to the corner and heads up top. PAC looks for the Black Arrow but Page moves. Page looks for the Buckshot Lariat but PAC dodges it. PAC looks for the snap German suplex but Page reverses it. PAC gets in the referee’s face with Page holding his back, then delivers a blind low blow. That just anger Page though, as he delivers a big lariat, followed by the Deadeye for the win!

wINNER: “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE

That marks PAC’s first loss in AEW. The announcers discuss if Page’s next step is a title shot at the winner of Jericho Vs. Cody later tonight.

The Chairman, Shawn Spears is sitting on the stage. He waits for his manager, then they make their way to the ring. The fans are not in his corner, but they are in the corner of his opponent, The Bad Boy, Joey Janela!

Shawn Spears W/Tully Blanchard Vs. Joey Janela

Spears tries to cheap-shot Janela right off the bat but it doesn’t work. They brawl to the outside and Janela leaps off the apron but gets caught with a powerslam! The Chairman unloads chops to the chest but Joey retaliates with some of his own. Shawn puts him back in the ring.

Spears drags Joey back out of the ring for a side suplex on the apron. Spears applies a rear chinlock to ground the nutty Janela. Eventually Joey fights out but Spears sends him over the top rope to the floor for a nasty fall. Spears gets Janela back inside and takes him to the corner where he uses the tag rope to tie Joey’s hair and keep him in the corner. Janela kicks Spears away, then tries to run but gets pulled back by the hair. Janela tries to untangle himself but he’s stuck by the hair, so he just rips his head, leaving hair hanging from the rope.

Janela starts to built up a head of steam but Spears drops him and applies a Sharpshooter. Joey grabs the rope to force the break. Janela stomps Spears in the corner and hits a running knee to the face. Spears rolls out of the ring to get a breath but Joey takes him out with a senton from the top rope! Janela puts him back in the ring and heads to the top rope but Spears hits a suplex from the middle rope for two-count.

Joey gets to his feet and tosses Shawn out of the ring before hitting a suicide dive. Back in the ring, Janela hits a series of strikes and a suplex for a two count. Tully distracts Janela from the apron so Spears can take control of the match again. Spears drops Joey on the top turnbuckle with a backbreaker. Spears drags Joey around ringside and distracts the referee to hit a piledriver at ringside…with Blanchard jumping from the steps with an assist! Spears puts Joey back in the ring and hits a Death Valley Driver for the win!

He says things haven’t quite worked out so far, but take the best bands on the planet and none of them were great the first time they played together. Penelope Ford walks up and kisses Sabian on the cheeks. She says “why be bad, when you can be superbad?”, then they leave.

Winners: So Cal Uncensored

Weird finish, felt kinda out of the blue and flat. After the match, the Lucha Bros come in and attack Scorpio and Kazarian. Pentagon wants to hit the package piledriver on a chair but the lights go out. When they come back up, Pentagon is in the ring with…another Pentagon! They mirror each others movements until the new Pentagon hits an STO. Fenix runs in and the new Pentagon hits him with Angel’s Wings and takes off the mask to reveal himself as Christopher Daniels! SCU then regroup and stand tall to end the segment.

It’s time to find out if the student is greater than the master. Emi Sakura was the trainer of the AEW Women’s Champion, Riho. As the two stand in the ring to get introduced, Emi is quite emotional.

Once they’re gone, Cody slowly gets to his feet and he’s angry. MFJ tries to explain why he did it and he cries on his knees. Cody walks around the ring looking at the fans, then lifts MFJ up. The scarf-wearing devil then kicks Cody square in the gonads! That was a good swerve because it looked like Cody was going to hit MJF. The fans chant “a$$hole” at MFJ as he screams at Cody before fixing his scarf and leaving. At the top of the ramp, a fan throws his drink over MFJ!

We get a video package for the main event bewteen Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega. They reference WWE multiple times in the video and that’s something AEW needs to stop doing.

Omega comes out first, then Moxley is out second and he comes through the crowd – because he got attacked on the ramp a few weeks ago. Unsanctioned matches make zero sense IMO; there’s still a referee, it’s on TV, etc. Regardless, let the chaos begin.

Unsanctioned Match

Jon Moxley Vs. Kenny Omega

The bell rings and these two men throw hands right away. They brawl into the corner, with Omega then delivering a big kick to drop Moxley. Omega whips Moxley into the corner but then eats a back elbow. Moxley delivers another chop, but then Moxley catches him with a sidewalk slam.

Moxley hits Omega in the gut again, then across the back twice with the bat! Moxley with a third shot to the back of Kenny, who is now bleeding and punching the mat. Moxley hits him again, then pulls him by the hair and asks him to “talk some $hit now”. Moxley sets the barbed-wire bat on the back of Kenny and presses it down with his foot, then stomps it!

Moxley poses like Omega, then tries to use the barbed-wire on his face but Kenny fights him off and looks for a German suplex but Moxley scrapes his arm with the bat! Omega releases Jon and hits him in the head with the trash can, then hits a piledriver onto it! Kenny gets into the ring and “sweeps” the mop across the back of Moxley, before hitting him with the bat. Omega hit Jon with the leaping leg drop onto the mop! Kenny cut his hand badly doing that move.

Omega grabs a trash can from under the ring, then sets it on the ring post. He hits Jon with the front-flip fireman’s carry, leaps onto the middle rope, grabs the trash can, and hits a moonsault with it for a near-fall! Omega goes under the ring again and pulls-out a black board covered in mouse traps! Omega slides the board into the ring, but Moxley starts delivering right hands.

Kenny hits the switch knee and comes off the ropes but gets dropped with a clothesline. Moxley lifts Omega and release suplexes him onto the board of mouse traps! Now it’s Moxley’s turn to go under the ring and he brings thick gold chains inside. Moxley curls the ball of chains up on the mat and hits Kenny with a sidewalk slam onto them! Near-fall from Moxley.

Moxley lifts Omega and hits a neckbreaker but Kenny kicks out at one and Jon smiles. Moxley lifts the chair and puts it in Kenny’s mouth and pulls it back. Omega cracks Moxley with the lid of a trash can to get free. Moxley hits a urinage, then goes back under the ring and gets a screwdriver or an ice pick, hard to tell. Moxley tries to stab Kenny with it but Omega ducks and he impales the turnbuckle. Moxley hits Omega with a high-angle back drop on the chains.

Moxley wraps the chains around Omega’s throat and tries to toss him from the ring but Omega breaks free and hits two snap dragon suplexes. He looks for a third but Moxley bits his arm to break free. Moxley swings for a lariat but Kenny ducks and does hit the third suplex. Kenny wraps the chain around Moxley’s throat and throws him over the ropes. Kenny chokes Moxley until he basically passes out, then drops him. Omega lines-up, then hits his famous tope to Moxley through the propped table at ringside!

Kenny sends Moxley back into the ring and grabs a black bag from under the ring. He opens it up and pulls out a shard of broken glass from the table Moxley put him through weeks ago. Kenny tries to cut Moxley’s face, but can’t, so he cuts his hand instead! Omega then puts the glass into the bag and stomps on it, before spreading the glass over the mat. Moxley kicks Omega and runs but Kenny hits a sit-out spinebuster onto the glass for a near-fall! Moxley grabs Jon’s legs and drags him over the glass before turning it into a Sharpshooter. Moxley crawls through the broken glass to get to the bottom rope!

There’s no rope break in these matches but Kenny let go. Omega lifts shards of glass into his hand and forces them into Moxley’s mouth! He looks for the V-Trigger but Moxley dodges it and hits the snap dragon suplex onto the glass! Kenny responds with a switch knee and knocks Moxley from the ring. Moxley crawls up the ramp, and Kenny grabs the screwdriver from the top turnbuckle. Omega stalks Moxley on the ramp and digs the screwdriver into his forehead! Kenny then calls his friends from The Elite out to ringside and asks them to get him something. They don’t want to do it but he convinces them to go backstage and get whatever it is.

The Bucks and Hangman Page then bring out a barbed wire spider-web – as the announcers refer to it – and Omega lifts Moxley onto his shoulders. Omega looks for the One-Winged Angel but Moxley climbs down. Omega looks for the V-Trigger but Moxley blocks it and suplexes Omega off the stage onto the mass of barber wire!

Officials and some wrestlers come out and pull both men free but you can see the wire sticking in their skin. The match isn’t over though, as Moxley punches the officials. Moxley grabs Kenny and tries to suplex him into a circular plexi-glass Full Gear sign, but Kenny fights him off. Omega hits the V-Trigger through the sign and both men are down!

Moxley is the first man out of the hole but Kenny sits-up, smiling. They stumble through the crowd and Kenny punches the back of Moxley until they reach ringside. Omega gets Moxley back into the ring and slides in, but Moxley hits Paradigm Shift! Kenny kicks out!
