Why WWE Booked Handicap Title Match At Elimination Chamber

Lio Rush does a lot of talking as Bobby Lashley’s hypeman. He certainly seemed to provoke Finn Balor and now an Intercontinental Title Match is set for Elimination Chamber on Sunday.

WWE has a lot of reasons why they book certain matches, but putting a title on the line in a handicap match is certainly interesting. Dave Meltzer discussed the IC Title booking decision during Wrestling Observer Radio where he proposed that a title change is on the way, but Lashley must remain protected.

“Doesn’t that suck? I mean like realistically, a handicap match? I don’t mind a handicap match, but the title should be at stake in a handicap match.”

“I think the idea is that Finn Balor can pin Lio Rush and win the title and that way they protect Lashley because of maybe the idea that Vince thinks you know, maybe Vince thinks it’s unrealistic for Finn Balor to beat Lashley, but it’s very realistic for him to beat Lio Rush.”

Meltzer went on to say, “I think it’s completely stupid too,” and he’s not defending this booking decision. Either way, it looks like Finn Balor could be set up for a title win a month after he failed to defeat Brock Lesnar in Phoenix.
