Dolph Ziggler has made his name plenty famous in his time with WWE. But it turns out there were no plans for any kind of long run when he returned for a solo run following The Spirit Squad’s breakup.

Ziggler recently appeared on Lilian Garcia’s Chasing Glory podcast where he said his original WWE name was supposed to be David Diggler. He was told that he could pick his own name when he expressed worry about this new moniker, but he had to make sure his initials were still a double D.

When Ziggler showed up on Raw he found out his name was Dolph Ziggler because that’s what the tag said on his gear. He was told due to the new Reality Era with names like John Cena and Randy Orton gaining steam that they wanted to present a real guy to the fans.

Ziggler tried to argue that he could be Googled so people can tell who he really is. But he made it work and thought it was at least a step-up from being a male cheerleader.

I love pro wrestling and hate BS. These two things drive me. Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News. Worked in finance before realizing pro wrestling journalism made much less sense. Pro beachballs at pro wrestling shows, pro dives if someone catches, anti bullies, olives, and pineapples on pizza.
