Following his shocking victory over Kevin Owens at MSG last week, AJ Styles made a major announcement. He revealed he was bringing back the US Championship Open Challenge. He mentioned it on Talking Smack, and AJ Styles is nothing if not a man of his word.
This is potentially the best thing to happen to Smackdown’s roster. AJ Styles can have a great match with almost anyone. These open challenge matches could be the highlight of Smackdown. John Cena’s Open Challenge was a good showcase of talent; Styles could probably do it so much better.
While there are plenty of fresh and exciting match-ups possible, here are 5 superstars who should really take the initiative and answer the challenge.
(Also, I will not be mentioning big PPV worthy matches that are totally worth $9.99 only on the WWE Network. AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, or John Cena should be saved for PPVs.)
5. Tye Dillinger
Dillinger’s been doing a whole lot of nothing recently. It almost feels like he was called up for the sake of a call-up. Just so they could say that Dillinger made it to the main roster. He hasn’t really had any memorable matches to really show just why he’s popular. He’s no slouch in the ring.
If he were to answer the Open Challenge, it would put a lot of eyes on him. It would be the match to prove why he was called up. People who don’t watch NXT don’t know why everyone loves him. A good match with AJ for the US Championship would be a reason for people to keep their eyes on him.
He wouldn’t need to necessarily win, but if given a good amount of time, Tye and AJ could put on a barn-burner. Their little showdown at the Independence Day Battle Royal was good. A mach would be even better.
