Five Opponents for John Cena At Summerslam

John Cena makes his return to the WWE in a little over two weeks on the July 4th episode of Smackdown Live. While the date of his return is clearly to help the give the show’s ratings a boost- it also brings him back to TV just in time to create a feud for Summerslam.

The most interesting aspect of Cena’s return is the fact that he is now a ‘free agent.’ What this involves exactly, we are still not sure, but we have since been told that the storyline reason for it is because he was given that status during the Superstar Shakeup post-Wrestlemania.

One of the reasons this is so interesting is because of the multitude of potential feuds this allows him. With Cena able to switch between brands, he can potentially have a match at the biggest party of the summer with any member of the current roster.

With Cena’s appearance time in the WWE lower than it has ever been, the company needs to make the most of Big Match John before Hollywood consumes him altogether. He is one of the most valuable wrestlers on the roster and a feud with him will instantly elevate any current talent.  With that in mind, the WWE should be very considerate when it comes to selecting who will get the John Cena rub at Summerslam. Here are five potential candidates who would benefit from a feud with John Cena this summer.

Jinder Mahal

Let’s start with the obvious one. Jinder Mahal’s run as WWE champion has been controversial, to say the least. The former 3MB member’s rise from jobber to WWE champion has not sat well with some fans and the longer his reign lasts, the more viewers the company could be turning away.

While it still remains unknown as to whether his title run has had the intended success in India, a giant match against John Cena at Summerslam could really help boost that market. Cena is a worldwide star, one of perhaps two (Brock Lesnar) that the WWE has these days and his appeal would really help sell this match in India.

It could also be sold on Cena beating Ric Flair’s record. John currently sits joint with Flair at 16 after his victory at the Royal Rumble this year and a victory over Jinder would see him break that long-standing record. There is also the option of having Corbin cash in after the match, thus cementing him as a top level star as well.
