3) Edge- New Year’s Revolution 2006
The Money in the Bank ladder match is one of the most popular events on the WWE calendar, but it could have all been so different had the WWE not got the first cash-in right.
Edge had won the first ever Money in the Bank contract at Wrestlemania 21 and would go on to carry the belt for 10 whole months before finally cashing it in at New Year’s Revolution 2006, and the timing of the cash-in was perfection.
Having just retained his WWE title in an Elimination Chamber match, John Cena lay bloodied and beaten in the middle of the ring. Cena had held the title for an impressive 10 months since the night Edge had won his briefcase, and fans were starting to tire off his Hulk Hogan inspired victories on every PPV. As Cena lay, with blood pouring down his face, Vince McMahon came out at the top of the stage and declared that Edge was now going to cash in his Money in the Bank contract, and the rest is history.
This cash-in was so important for a number of reasons, firstly, it really gave the Money in the Bank briefcase its identity in the WWE, and 11 years late fans still wait at the end of every title match to see if someone is going to cash in their title shot. Secondly, it turned Edge into one of the most important superstars of the last decade, with the Rated R Superstar going on to win an astonishing 11 titles in the last six years of his career.
