Santino Marella had a pretty varied career in the WWE. After winning the Intercontinental title on his debut, he quickly became one of the WWE’s most consistent comedy characters.
Throughout his career, he would become a two-time intercontinental champion, a one-time US champion, a one-time tag champion, and a two-time Miss Wrestlemania. He would also come very close to winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the Royal Rumble match.
That’s right- back in 2012, Santino Marella not only competed in but also finished second in an Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Marella had earned his place in the matchup following an injury caused to Randy Orton by Daniel Bryan.
In quick need of replacement WWE announced a battle royal on Smackdown, which saw Santino Marella emerge victorious, much to the delight of fans everywhere. Santino’s performance in the match itself was widely applauded- his character work, as always, was spot on and he was hugely over with the crowd. While he may have been over, he was never a credible main eventer and he never competed for the title again- the reaction from the night, however, did send him on a credible US title run over the following months.
