Ryback talks about the time he had a staph infection while working in WWE as the Intercontinental Champion.
He says he was working a match against Big Show one evening and his finger got cut. He worked the entire match with his finger cut open, and due to all the dirt and grime that exists in a wrestling ring, he believes that was the initial cause of his issues. He was working on RAW a couple of days later and he did a dive on the outside of the ring where he landed on his knee.
He initially felt pain in his knee and during his drive from one town to the next that night, it became consistently worse. After visiting a hospital, it was discovered that he had a staph infection and he had to spend the next several days in hospital, where doctors continually drained his knee with needles. Just as he was on the verge of requiring surgery, the swelling subsided and he started to recover.
Even at that point his knee remained somewhat swollen for over a month, but he was happy to be able to return to WWE television. WWE told him after missing one PPV with the injury, if he didn’t soon find out when he was going to be back they were going to have to strip him of the Intercontinental Championship.
