Talk is Jericho Recap w/ Mick Foley – WWE Debut, Developing the ‘Mankind’ Character, Hell in A Cell vs. The Undertaker, More!
Jericho welcomes Mick Foley to the show.
Foley talks about his rise to stardom in WWE. He says that you can never be a huge star in WWE until Vince McMahon fully gets on board with your character, and Jericho fully agrees. Foley says he cut those famous ‘Mankind’ promos with Jim Ross and they really grabbed McMahon’s attention. McMahon got on board and Foley soon started a feud with Triple H, who was also trying to break into the main event scene in WWE at that time.
To rewind a little bit, Foley talks about his struggles trying to get an opportunity in WWE. He reached out to WWE on many occasions but he was continuously told by JJ Dillon that WWE weren’t looking for new talent, which Foley found hard to believe given the presence of performers such as ‘Mantaur’. Foley blamed Dillon in his book and he regrets that now, because Dillon was simply the messenger.
McMahon initially brought Foley into WWE because of relentless pressure from Jim Ross, who urged McMahon to give Foley a chance. Bruce Prichard has told Foley that one day after consistent pressure from Ross, McMahon finally said, “Okay I’ll bring him in, but I’m covering up his face.” That was the beginning of the Mankind character.
