The Business of the Business – Goldberg’s Title Win Was Smart Booking, Even if We Don’t Like It
Well one thing’s for certain, I didn’t see this coming a year ago.
At last night’s Fastlane PPV, Goldberg pinned and defeated Kevin Owens in just 22 seconds to capture the WWE Universal Title, ensuring that this Title will be on the line in his match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.
There was plenty of speculation leading into Fastlane, that Goldberg would be booked to capture the Universal Title because Vince McMahon was set on having his two biggest names face off on the grandest stage of them all with his prestigious Championship on the line. Still, this failed to prevent the internet backlash that prevailed after the conclusion of the PPV last night.
There’s a significant part of the WWE Universe that does not believe the Universal Title should be on the shoulder of a part-time talent. These fans have watched Owens build the Title for the majority of the past year, and feel that he deserved to defend it while headlining WrestleMania next month. I get that argument and in some ways I agree with it, however there’s a whole lot more to this story than determining who ‘deserves’ something.
