Heels, Bad Guys, Villains… Characters of wrestling entertainment who make you cringe in your seat only to stand up and boo them out of the arena. Now granted, there are some in the WWE where that happens OCCASIONALLY. But I’m talking about the likes of Roddy Piper to Macho Man; from loving to hate Ric Flair to The Corporate Champion, The Rock; from the fearfulness of Yokozuna to the Undertaker and his Ministry; brute force of Andre the Giant to the cerebral assassin HHH.
These days we have “Heels” who whine and don’t stand up for their beliefs and continually apologize and get dirty wins; ya you can say that they always have been, but you can bet your bottom dollar that after one week of whining came behind the scenes attacks and powerful matches to assure everyone that they are the real deal when it comes to top heels.
After watching CM Punk “turn” heel, it got me thinking that he isn’t really a heel, this is the guy we all loved after dropping the pipe bomb on the establishment, the Anti-Hero. Ya, we hate Cena’s wrestling tactics but he will forever be a good guy, I mean nice guys aren’t even that nice. But we have one extreme of a good guy (Cena) to the other extreme of Big Show. Show has been around so long that he is not a threat to anyone who has watched WWE in the past year. We have seen him over the shoulders of John Cena since 2004 at WM20 to being lifted up every time the WWE needs to sell a “Face”. He is tiresome and should be used sparingly.
However, there are some heels who do work these days.
Daniel Bryan- It is fun to hate him because he has the hilarious sayings (YES! Vegan!) but he is also fun to watch in the ring. Reminds me of when Kurt Angle first graced us with his awesomeness.
Dolph Ziggler- The one who has it all, or so he states, and he does indeed back it up… as his shirt states. It takes me back to 1992 if Mr. Perfect and Ric Flair planned an awesome spawn to take over their traits. What I love most about Dolph is how they are using him against past Heels like Jericho and Christian. What better way to be sold as a top Heel with running over the past.
Wade Barrett- Personal bias here but I love everything about this guy (besides his new song, what the hell?) Here we have brute force mixed with elegance. He will come down the aisle with all his British suave only to have his bare knuckle aggression unleashed on you. He IS the real deal. He has only begun, once he comes back in full mode in the WWE, we will see the next big thing and then some.
Cody Rhodes- You are doing it right!
In closing, STOP recycling Heel gimmicks. Give us someone to fear, someone to hate, someone we love to hate. Give us good stories so we can go back to a time where we believe our heroes have no chance in hell of winning. Have the bad guys holding all the cards with a foreign object up their sleeves. It is time for real heels to come back to the squared circle.
