How Long Can John Cena Remain Face?
by Bobby Quinn
It's definitely been one of the most debated wrestling topics in the last ten years and the subject matter is John Cena's character. Everybody knows the John Cena story and the general feeling among most wrestling fans is that he should turn heel again. John Cena showed he could be more entertaining with his adult oriented raps against The Rock when they feuded last year, I just kept saying to myself - why can't he stay this way? We never really got an answerer as to why the old "thuganomics" John Cena couldn't return full time but my guess is the WWE is trying their best to stay in the clear rated G water. It's really sad that the WWE has decided to do this, if you think back even to 1996 they had more atittude then they do now with guys like Mankind and Goldust.
If you ask me the WWE is more corporate than ever at this point, they really have no shred of what they use to have and they seem to have forgot one thing - this is wrestling. Wrestling is naturally going to attract a crowd that hungers for more than just Barney sing along style John Cena, this all seems lost on the WWE which is a bit confusing when their number one guy is getting booed out of arenas. A lot of people are attributing Linda McMahons senate run for the WWE's G rated change, that could be the case but there's no reason the WWE can't put an edge on Cena's character.
Do I think we will ever see John Cena turn heel? Yes I do. I do believe that the WWE will have to make that choice because Cena really can't stay like this forever. I know the WWE is obviously content right now with their merchandise sales and a 3.0 Raw rating every Monday, that works fine for them - everyone's happy except for the old school wrestling fans like me. At the end of the day WWE is a business, their job is to make money and they have done that by targeting a kid audience. The real question is why just be content? Why not put Cena's character into a revolutionary change and get the wrestling world talking again? They need to stop playing it so safe, they've taken chances in the past and it paid off big time for them.
If done right a John Cena heel turn could be big, big money for the WWE. To be honest he would probably be getting cheered louder than ever once he turned heel, there would be so many things you could do with his character. If you recall Hulk Hogan turning heel in WCW it renewed all of his feuds and made them look fresh. Suddenly when Hogan was fighting Ric Flair or Randy Savage it added a newness to the feud, the WWE could do this with John Cena. Even though we had seen the match a million times - a John Cena/Randy Orton feud would seem fresh, new and exciting with a heel John Cena. Only time will tell but the change seems inevitable. Well that's my rant, hope you all liked - leave comments good or bad!

The whole Thuganomics Cena and the current Cena getting over no matter what is what turned me off of WWE for a while in the first place. Plus I am a fan of the underdog company so that is why I was attracted to TNA and why I enjoy RoH as well. That and there was actual wrestling matches and not ju...

My cable carrier at the time didn't carry Smackdown, so I didn't see any of the Thugonomics themed Cena. He's really over in the market WWE is aiming for, the kiddos. A heel turn would be refreshing but don't hold your breath. It's like the 80's all over again with PG era crap. Here's hoping in 8 ye...
